Study finds oil and gas industry largest contributor to ‘hot spot’

Study finds oil and gas industry largest contributor to ‘hot spot’

NASA found 250 plumes accounting for more than 50 percent of methane emissions
The orange and red spots on this satellite image show the area in the country that has the highest concentrations of methane emissions. Researchers published a study on Monday that natural gas operations are largely responsible for the high concentrations of methane in the Four Corners.

Andrew Thorpe of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, powers up a thermal camera imaging system next to a storage tank at a natural-gas facility near Aztec. Researchers were in the Four Corners last year working on a unique collaborative study to reveal the cause of the methane concentration over the area.
This photograph of a laptop computer screen shows a storage tank spewing methane gas next to a natural-gas facility near Aztec, as seen from a thermal camera imaging system operated by Andrew Thorpe of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Researchers flew over the area in 2015 as they worked on a project to identify the causes of significant methane leaks.
