Finally: A rainy week is expected ahead of us in Southwest Colorado.
“Last week was the first sign of a transition from a summer to a fall and winter weather pattern, and you’ll see more of that again this week,” said Mike Meyers, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.
The National Weather Service predicts the heaviest rains of the week are expected to be Sunday night, with the rain showers beginning Sunday afternoon and extending through Monday morning.
The chance of rain Sunday night is 60% in Durango and 50% in Cortez. Silverton has a 70% chance of rain Sunday night. Telluride has 50% chance of rain Sunday night and a 60% chance on Monday.
Isolated rain showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast for Tuesday and Tuesday night, with a clearing trend expected Wednesday, Meyers said.
Thursday, a chance of isolated rain showers and thunderstorms is expected to return to Southwest Colorado, he said.
“We’ll have a southern disturbance move through the area Sunday evening and Monday. Later in the week we’ll see a southwesterly flow over Southwest Colorado that will be relatively moist,” Meyers said.
Meyers said the storms from the south will be fairly warm, and he does not expect high-elevation snow, with perhaps some exceptions on the highest peaks in the San Juan Mountains.
While the monsoonal pattern was drier than normal and we are out of the peak monsoonal season, Meyers said monsoonal rain patterns coming in from the southwest can extend into early October.
