On the first play of its season, the Mancos High School football served notice in Colorado that it will be a force to be reckoned with as senior Anthony Medina took the kickoff back for a touchdown.
Then, for the remainder of his team’s 68-0 road win Plateau Valley on Aug. 31, Medina produced several impressive plays while scoring three rushing touchdowns and returning an interception for a score.
Several other Mancos players got in on the action, including sophomore running back Chase Moore, whose speed proved to be a difference-maker during each of his three touchdown runs.
Senior quarterback Breccen Morelli scored a rushing touchdown and returned a fumble for a touchdown as the Bluejays jumped out to a 24-0 first quarter lead and led 54-0 at halftime. Two fourth-quarter touchdowns put Mancos ahead by 68 points as the Bluejays defense refused to yield a score.
Now 1-0 on the season, Mancos will prepare for a road matchup against Merino High School on Sept. 13.
The game will be especially important to the Bluejays given that Merino eliminated Mancos from the first round of the eight-man playoffs last season with a resounding 40-0 upset victory.
