Mountain Studies Institute invites the public to a volunteer work day from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Ophir Fen, north of Silverton.
Fens are groundwater-driven peatlands, which provide valuable ecosystem services to our watershed. Work will include transplanting sedges and other vegetation to help the fen continue to improve toward a fully functioning wetland.
This project is a cooperative effort among Mountain Studies Institute, the San Juan National Forest and Durango Mountain Lands, supported by funds from the National Forest Foundation.
Volunteers will meet at Animas City Park and carpool to Silverton. Bring lunch, water, sunblock, layers for all weather, rain gear and footwear that is appropriate for walking in wet, muddy conditions.
