Avalanches leave path of destruction across popular trails

Colorado Trail may not be accessible this year, officials say
Hikers attempt to cross downed trees on the Ice Lakes Trail. High avalanche activity this past winter has caused extensive trail damage across the San Juan Mountains.
Avalanches change the landscape, causing search and rescue crews to figure out new landing zones and best routes to reach people, said Ron Corkish, president of La Plata County Search and Rescue.
If trail work would take too long and be too dangerous for crews, the U.S. Forest Service can use blasting. The agency plans to blast areas of the Elk Creek Trail this September.
