EPA drills into American Tunnel to unravel mine pollution mystery

Driven by desire to know what lies beneath, crews bore deeper every day
Toby Wieminger, left, drilling supervisor, and Clint Barnes, drilling helper, both with Godbe Drilling, operate a rig Friday as they bore a hole toward the American Tunnel north of Silverton near the Gold King Mine.
The Environmental Protection Agency estimated it will take nearly a month to drill more than 500 feet to reach the American Tunnel. The agency hopes to understand more about the inner workings of mines in the upper Cement Creek basin to inform its overall cleanup plan.
