The Dolores Ranger District plans to burn about 2,700 acres in the Lake Canyon area about 10 miles east of Dove Creek in Dolores County. Operations are planned to begin Sunday and continue through Monday; however, operation dates may be adjusted based on favorable weather conditions. The burn unit is adjacent to the Glade (FSR Road 504), east along FSR 216 and west along FSR 509.
Aerial/ground ignition operations may take place over several days. Burning operations will be conducted by qualified fire management personnel and other fire resources from the San Juan National Forest and other federal resources. The purpose is to reduce hazardous ground fuels, reduce the risk of unplanned catastrophic wildfire, restore ponderosa pine ecosystems and improve wildlife habitat.
Smoke will be visible from U.S. Highway 491 between Dove Creek and Pleasant View and may settle overnight into those areas.
Smoke from wildfires and prescribed fires may affect health. For more information, visit www.colorado.gov/pacific/cdphe/wood-smoke-and-health.
