A Durango man who is accused of exposing himself to a woman Sunday was arrested after he left his name and phone number for the victim, information police used to identify him.
The Durango Police Department arrested Kyle McCaw, 27, about 11:45 p.m. after a gas station attendant accused him of showing her his genitals without consent, according to arresting documents. The attendant was “visibly upset and had been crying” when officers contacted her, police said.
McCaw was released this week from the La Plata County Jail on a personal recognizance bond – meaning he was released on his word that he will appear in court, said La Plata County Sheriff’s Lt. Gary Boudreau.
McCaw declined to comment when reached by telephone Thursday.
The woman told police McCaw entered the gas station, asked for the bathroom key, and, upon returning it, held it below his waist “in a manor (sic) intended to get (her) to look down at his genital area,” according to an arrest affidavit.
When the woman looked at the key, she saw the man holding his penis in his hand next to the keys. The woman “tried to ignore it” and the man left for a few minutes, police said.
But McCaw came back and tried to make “small talk” with the woman while holding his genitals in his hand as she made coffee, police said in arresting documents.
“This continued for several minutes and the male remained exposed during this entire time,” police wrote in arresting documents.
The arresting officer identified a man with red hair and red facial hair sitting in the driver’s seat of a gold Toyota SUV outside the gas station that drove away as the officer arrived, according to arresting documents. The victim showed the officer a note McCaw allegedly left with his phone number and name, “Kyle.”
Police and dispatchers identified the phone number on the note as belonging to Kyle McCaw. The officer searched the name on social media and identified a profile picture that “was clearly the same male that I saw sitting in the gold SUV,” according to arresting documents.
McCaw is scheduled to appear June 26 in La Plata County Combined Courts.
