A Cortez woman is seeking baseball caps to support immigrants arriving in the city of Deming, New Mexico.
In May, Deming declared a state of emergency after the U.S. Border Patrol released a high number of immigrants in the city about an hour west of Las Cruces, according to the Deming Headlight. The immigrants had been held in Border Patrol units in El Paso, Texas, and Antelope, New Mexico, the Headlight reported.
The city hopes that by declaring a state of emergency, it can access state funds to meet the basic needs of the high numbers of arrivals.
Cortez resident Heidi Brugger has family in Deming who are collecting baseball caps as a way to protect arrivals from the sun.
Brugger is hosting a collection drive in Cortez and plans to send them to Deming on Friday.
She invites locals with any extra baseball caps to drop them off at her home at 340 E. Montezuma Ave. For more information, contact Brugger via email at [email protected] or by phone at 564-9481.
