I live in Dolores County, but have interests in Montezuma County, so I think it is not out of line for me to inject myself into Montezuma County affairs from time to time.
Larry Don Suckla was bashed in a letter to the editor (“What do our commissioners represent?,” May 2). Mr Suckla proposed a kind of tax swap in which the tax swap involves raising sales taxes with a corresponding decrease in property taxes. This proposal looks to me like this would require tourists and other non-residents, like me, to contribute a little more revenue to the tax base and thereby relieve some taxes on the permanent residents. I can’t see the downside for the county residents.
Also, the writer said that Mr. Suckla is on the side of the wealthy and multinational corporations. As I drive the main drag, I see Taco Bell, Walmart, a couple of grocery stores and of course there are the big drilling companies. I can see how this tax idea will benefit KFC and the Kinder Morgans, but it looks to me like the bigger benefit is to permanent residents. The Kinder Morgans and the KFCs have to make a little money so they can remain viable and bring jobs to the area.
Maybe the letter writer could explain himself in more detail so we would have a better understanding of his opposition.
