Hoping to improve their times and marks in anticipation of the state track meet, members of the Dolores High School boys and girls track teams competed in the Ron Keller Invitational track meet in Durango on April 20.
Leading the way for the girls team as she has for much of her high school career was junior Jordan Elder, who placed first in the long jump (16 feet, 1 inch), fourth in the high jump (5 feet) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (27.83).
Also cracking the top 10 in at least two individual events were sophomore Sydney Smith, who placed fifth in the 100-meter dash (14.30) and 10th in the high jump (4 feet, 4 inches), and freshman Sam Castillo, who finished seventh in the shot put (27 feet, 6½ inches) and ninth in the discus (84 feet, 11¾ inches).
Other top-10 finishers for the Lady Bears included sophomore Anaya Martinez, who crossed the line seventh in the 3200-meter run (16:59.17), and junior Brenn Jeter, who finished 10th in the 100-meter hurdles (20.35).
The Dolores girls team finished sixth overall in the team standings of the 12-team meet, which was won by Durango High School.
On the boys side, Dolores was paced by senior Cael McHenry, who continued added to his already impressive season with a first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (16.89) and a second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (43.48).
Senior Phillip Hufman looked solid throughout his second-place finish in the 3200-meter run (11:05.94), and sophomore Ryan Nowlin led his team in the sprint events with a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash (23.94).
Junior Alden Adams crossed the line fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.80) and 200-meter dash (24.19) and junior Zane Eichner placed 10th in the 200-meter dash (25.03).
The Dolores boys team finished 7th out of 13 teams in the team standings. Durango High School took top honors in their home meet.
Next up for both Dolores track teams will be the Aztec Invitational, which will take place in Aztec, N.M., today.
