Mancos School of the West is hosting a gourd birdhouse-making workshop on Saturday.
Artist Janice Reich will lead the class, instructing participants in bird needs in creative gourd uses. She will discuss wild birds’ preferences in terms of an opening hole, interior space and the best locations for birdhouse placement.
And on the creative side, she will teach attendees gourd painting and design techniques, along with the best woodburning methods and dye coloring and finishing, in order for houses to survive the elements.
The workshop’s registration fee is $60, with a $20 materials fee. A cleaned and prepared gourd will be provided for each student, but if participants have a woodburning tool or a dust/paint mask and apron, they are encouraged to bring them.
