To mark 600 days of living in sanctuary, Rosa Sabido is hosting a vigil at the Mancos United Methodist Church on Saturday afternoon.
Sabido, who has lived in the United States for over 30 years, has been residing at the church since June 2017, after her application for a one-year stay of removal was denied by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She is one of a handful of Colorado women seeking sanctuary in a church to avoid deportation and has become a renowned national figure in her advocacy for immigrants’ rights.
The Saturday vigil – held purposefully right after International Women’s Day on March 8 – will take place from 4-6:30 p.m.
Attendees are invited to “bring poems, stories, and music to share around the theme of women who have struggled, survived, and changed history,” according to Sabido’s invitation.
After the vigil, there will be a soup, salad and dessert potluck, along with a letter-writing call to action.
