Logging, thinning plan for Dolores District is released

Project boosts forest health and economy, officials say
This photo depicts an overstocked stand with very few grasses or forbs on forest floor. The duff layer in this stand is thick and composed mostly of pine needles.
This photo shows a positive result of proposed treatments. The stand is relatively open and the oak patches are reduced, and there are areas with bare soil exposed for seedlings.
This stand of trees was recently killed by beetles. This stand would receive a salvage harvest, which would leave very few remaining pines. Remaining trees would be retained for seed trees. This stand has a well-established understory of Gambel oak and very few pine seedlings. Treatments would remove dead trees, reduce the oak understory and burn the duff layer, allowing seed to reach mineral soil and germinate. If seedlings do not take root, the area may be planted.
