The Dolores Library has some new staff and new programs.
Cheyenne Baber is the new children’s librarian. She is also an artist and offers free painting classes.
Bryan Kyle is the new library assistant. As “a lifelong bibliophile,” he can help you find a great read and suggest authors.
Baber has an art degree from the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. Her new painting classes have been very popular, and February and March slots have already filled up.
There is space available for the 6:30 p.m. class on April 18. It is open to all ages and no experience is necessary.
Her teaching style is to post a painting she created, then redo it step by step with the class.
“People are surprised how well their paintings turn out,” Baber said. “The guidance of breaking it down into steps makes it doable.”
“Group Chat” is a revamped after school program for all teenagers that meets on the second and fourth Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Snacks, crafts and scholastic assistance are available.
“We listen to the needs of the student, and then work to provide that,” Baber said.
A School to Farm program for students takes place on the first and third Thursdays starting at 3:30 pm. The program combines art, food, and culture. Activities include arts and crafts, meal preparation, and gardening.
The library is seeking one or two volunteers to serve a three-year term on the board of trustees. Applicants must live within the library district, which is the same as Dolores Re-4 School District. A letter of interest should be submitted.
Trustees support the library and determine what is working and what is not. They plan and help to market new services for the future of the library, attend special events, help manage finances and the facility and get involved with task force and committee work. The library board meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m., and the meetings are open to the public. The current board includes President Belinda Platts, Vice President Jeanne Becker, Secretary Gina Hernandez, Rysta Williford and Pat Kantor.
