The city of Durango has updated its website to improve navigation and accessibility on mobile devices.
CivicPlus, a New York-based municipal website design firm, awarded Durango a website makeover in 2011 that paid for the redesign of the city’s online presence, said Amber Blake, assistant city manager.
The redesign, which started about a year ago, cost the city only $6,625, Blake said. That is much less than the $35,000 it would have cost had the city not been awarded the redesign, Blake said.
The expenses the city did pay covered ancillary costs, she said, like integrating the library’s page, remapping the website and training staff how to use it.
“It’s just so much more user friendly,” she said.
The shell of the website, www.durangogov.org, has changed but most of the content is the same, Blake said. The city transfered all information, and that process gave staff a chance to change anything that was outdated.
The website was redesigned to be more accessible on mobile devices, Blake said. The old website was clunky and difficult to navigate on phones or tablets, she said.
The new mobile site offers easy-to-access tabs that link to areas that typically receive the most clicks, such as DGOV Television, the city code and agendas and minutes.
