David Moore will present the third annual John W. Sanders Lecture at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Student Union Ballroom at Fort Lewis College.
Moore, archaeological curator at North Carolina Maritime Museum, will discuss the underwater excavation and analysis of pirate Blackbeard’s flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge.
Tickets for the event will go on sale Friday, Feb. 1, and will cost $10 plus a $3 service fee. They will be available for purchase at the Durango Welcome Center, 802 Main Ave.; by phone at 247-7657; or online at www.durangoconcerts.com. If available, tickets will be sold at the door the day of the event for $15.
Five dollars of the ticket price will support San Juan Basin Archaeological Society’s Internship and Education Fund, which provides annually for two FLC student internships at the Center of Southwest Studies and summer FLC archaeology field school scholarships.
Moore’s lecture will include a brief historical introduction to Capt. Edward Thatch, aka Blackbeard, and what research has revealed about the pirate and his operations. His lecture will also discuss the location and archaeological investigation of the shipwreck site for the Queen Anne’s Revenge.
The event is co-sponsored by the San Juan Basin Archaeological Society and the FLC Anthropology Department.
