Mancos ranchers urge aging farmers to partner with youths to keep business going

Patricia and Jack Burk pointed to many benefits of having Dustin Stein take over management of their ranch, one of which being that they “gained a son,” they said.
Patricia and Jack Burk realized around 2010 that they needed someone to help manage their land if they hoped to keep Burk Beef in operation. They found Dustin Stein to take the job in 2012.
Jack Burk grew up raising cattle on a farm in Monte Vista. It wasn’t long into retirement that he realized he missed the cattle, leading to the formation of Burk Beef.

Stubborn Farm and Burk Beef is just off U.S. Highway 160, along County Road H. Despite living and working in California for years, Patricia Burk hoped to return to her family’s ranch in Mancos.
