A crowd of about 50 people came to greet the three final Mancos town administrator candidates Monday evening at the Mancos Community Center. Everyone had a chance to meet the candidates and ask what questions they might have for them. The three spent the day having their final interviews with panels made up of board members, area city managers and department heads. The candidates are: Sheri Dugdale, who is the assistant to the city manager of Durango; Mac Myers, who has been a resident of Mancos since 2005 and is the former district attorney; and Andrea Phillips, who is from Columbus, Ohio and municipal experience with her. The search committee was expected to make a decision Wednesday.

The County Commission meeting room was at capacity again recently. People around Dove Creek and Monticello are concerned about the implications of the Gunnison sage grouse being listed on the endangered species list. There are plenty of horror stories of how similar listings have disrupted life in other areas. County Commissioner Julie Kibel handed out copies of a sample letter she had written. In it she pointed out that the reasons the Federal Register list for factors that are contributing to the grouse's declining numbers don't apply to our area. Maybe the increase in human population is a factor in Gunnison, but that isn't the case here. The sage grouse population isn't being fragmented like the Federal Register claims. New roads aren't being built, new subdivisions are not infringing on sage grouse and sagebrush areas are not being converted to farm fields.

In an attempt to quell a brewing conflict among county road and bridge department, Camp Bird and Star mines, ice climbers and Ouray Mountain Rescue Team, the Board of Ouray County Commissioners assembled the parties for a work session Tuesday afternoon. Two issued, seemingly unrelated, prompted discussion. Ouray Ice Park manager Kevin Koprek asked commissioners why the county erected a sign on County Road 361 prohibiting rock and ice climbing within 60 feet of the road, year round. Road and Bridge Superintendent Chris Miller explained the sign is meant to make the public aware of an issue with climbers congregating in the middle of the road, with gear; climbing above the road and dislodging debris; and, climbing below the road, where snowplows could inadvertently dump loads of snow on them.
"The County right of way needs to be respected by everyone," Commissioner Lynn Padgett noted.

The City of Blanding is considering the improvement of land west of town near the Westwater Ruin. The hope is to restore the ruin, promote visitation and assist in the development of an archaeological program at the Utah State University campus in Blanding. The plans were discussed at the Feb. 26 meeting of the Blanding City Council meeting. The Westwater Ruin has fallen into disrepair but the city hopes that a restoration effort may be of great interest to residents and visitors alike. The area is part of two 640-acre sections that run down Westwater Canyon and includes a small natural bridge.
