The Ignacio girls basketball team remained undefeated in the 2A/1A San Juan Basin League on Saturday afternoon with a dominant 62-8 win against Norwood at IHS.
The Bobcats (5-4, 4-0 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) got off to a lightning-quick start and led 19-2 by the end of the first quarter and extended their lead to 40-6 by halftime. Ignacio guard Jayden Brunson scored 12 of her game-high 18 in the quarter, including two 3-pointers.
Ebonee Gomez scored 12 points for IHS. The Bobcats also got contributions from their bench, as Avaleena Nanaeto and Charlize Valdez scored seven points each.
Shailah Franklin, a freshman center, led the Mavericks (1-8, 1-1 SJBL) with four points.
Ignacio will hit the road and will take on Mancos (0-9, 0-2 SJBL) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mancos High School.
Boys basketballIgnacio 57, Norwood 25The Ignacio boys basketball team fared well against Norwood on Saturday at IHS, as they outscored the Mavericks 12-4 in the third quarter en route to a 57-25 win.
The Bobcats (4-6, 3-1 SJBL) got off to a slow start and struggled to gain separation in the first half. Cael Spangler, a junior guard for the Mavericks, scored all seven points for Norwood in the first quarter, and Ignacio held a slim 11-7 lead. IHS’ offense picked up in the second quarter and scored 14 points to lead 25-18 at halftime.
Norwood (0-9, 0-2 SJBL) would get within five at 25-20 just after the second half began, but Ignacio quickly stretched its lead. Brady McCaw hit two 3-pointers in the frame as part of his 10 points in the game. In the final quarter, the Bobcats got everyone involved, as Bryce Finn and Dylan Labarthe scored eight points each. Finn finished with 13 points.
The Bobcats will travel to Mancos at 7 p.m. Tuesday for a tilt with the Bluejays (5-4, 2-0 SJBL).
