It’s official: Mancos school playground open for use

School district opens playground, is roofing gym lobby and framing athletic quarters
Mancos Elementary School students enjoy their new playground, which is now officially completed and ready for play.
Elementary Principal Cathy Epps thanked the youth task force, town and Superintendent Brian Hanson for making the playground possible, before cutting a ribbon and allowing students to play.
Elementary students gather before the new playground’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. The structure will primarily serve these students during the school day, but after school will be open to all town residents, as stipulated by the Greater Outdoors Colorado grant that helped fund the project.
The new playground features a variety of student-approved design components, including group swings.
One feature of the new playground site is a bridge crossing over the Mancos River.
Of the additions underway, the north side of the Mancos school gym is currently the furthest along, according to Jaynes Construction Corp.
Additions to the south side of the school gym are not as far along, although framing and plumbing work were scheduled to begin last week, according to the district website. Work on the gym is expected to wrap up in the spring, after which Jaynes will be able to begin renovations to the performing arts center.
Last week, construction began on decking and exterior framing work on the elementary school additions, according to the school district website. When complete, the expansion will include additional administrative space and a new library and cafeteria.
One of the renovations currently underway at the Mancos school site is a new artificial turf football field, which will also include a new concessions building and bleachers.
