Lewis-Arriola Fire Protection District responded Saturday morning to a burning double-wide trailer just north of the intersection of County Road 22 and Colorado Highway 184, about 10 miles north of Cortez.
The structure fire call came out at 10:39 a.m. The fire department sent two engines and two water tankers.
Lewis-Arriola Fire Protection District Chief George Deavers said no one was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries. He said firefighters used one hose in the interior to knock down the fire in the kitchen. Firefighters then pulled down the ceiling to suppress the fire in the attic.
The front of the mobile home did not appear to be damaged during the fire, but the backside of the structure was smoking heavily, and there were several holes in the roof where flames poked through. A strong northeasterly wind helped fan the flames.
The flames and smoke began to dissipate about 11:15 a.m.
Deavers said the cause of the fire has not been confirmed, but he’s pretty sure it was from a propane heater. An investigator will take a look next week, he said. Deavers said there was a wood stove in the mobile home, but it had not been used in years.
