Beatles tribute band in Dolores Feb. 2

Irwin to discuss Pueblo I occupation



The Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society is pleased to announce Don Irwin on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at the First Methodist Church, 515 North Park Street, Cortez, to discuss the Pueblo I period Ancestral Puebloan occupation of the Abajo Uplands, Monticello Ranger District, Manti-La Sal National Forest in SE Utah. After 40 years of archaeological investigations, the Forest remains a gray spot on most peoples' map. This talk summarizes and, where possible, interprets the Forest PI occupation in light of the last decade of work conducted on the District.

The core of the early Ancestral Puebloan occupation is in the areas of Milk Ranch Point, South Cottonwood Wash, and the Allen Canyon/Chippean Ridge. Initial work in the 1970s indicated a large number of Pueblo I period sites on the forest. Reports postulated that the occupation was seasonal with use by lowland populations. A more recent study of the three areas indicates a great deal of complexity in the Pueblo I occupation that potentially negates the seasonal use status of the Abajos. Small-scale villages with clusters of single- and multiple-residences, satellite field houses, check dams, terraces, an array of isolated features, and artifact scatters substantiate the findings. This talk presents the last decade of study from this relatively well-preserved but little known portion of the Pueblo I pie.

Donald Irwin has served as the District Heritage Manager at the Moab-Monticello Ranger District of the Manti-La Sal National Forest for the past 11 years. He obtained his Master's Degree from Arizona State University in 1993. In his current position, Don manages the cultural resource program that covers over 500,000 acres in the Abjao and La Sal Mountains areas in Southeast Utah on lands administered by the USDA Forest Service.

Art show to feature Dolores students' work



Dolores schools will have their annual art show at the Cortez Cultural Center. Art from 5th- through 12th-grade students will be on display from Feb. 6 through Feb. 15 with a reception on Wednesday, Feb. 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. Art from Karen Webster's graphic design, Amy Woodward's 7th- through 12th-grade students and Mara Vinton's 5th- and 6th-grade students. There will be snacks and live music to enjoy while viewing the art. Attendees will also be able to vote on their favorite artworks for the people's choice awards.





Roberts to discuss legislative issues



On Saturday, Feb. 16, the League of Women Voters is sponsoring a Legislative Low Down with State Senator Ellen Roberts of Durango and State Representative Don Coram of Montrose. The program will be at 10 a.m. in the Calvin Denton Room at Empire Electric, 801 North Broadway, Cortez. These legislators, whose districts include Montezuma County, will discuss the issues expected to come before the Legislature this year. The event is open to the public.
