I’d like to draw some contrast between the candidates in our commissioner race, MB McAfee and Jim Candelaria. During the debate at the county annex, a question regarding the opiate dilemma came up. Jim’s response sat me up in my seat. There was something said about veterans, and “education that may be available out there, but other than that, I’m not sure that there’s a lot a commissioner can do.”
MB spoke for five minutes about potential solutions – programs in the nonprofit world and federal funding.
At the Livestock debate, there was a child care question. Jim thought it might make a good business opportunity. MB recognized it as something that needed more attention and made note of services through grants and other resources.
The hemp stuff is exciting and they both seem to have good ideas, but MB’s idea about Montezuma County branding in relation to our beef and food that we grow – that I see going somewhere.
Jim had my vote last race. He doesn’t this race. He lost it at the Dolores River Fest. We had a nice talk about the issues. Jim asked if I knew why he’d be a better choice. He actually spoke the answer with me for effect. I didn’t agree, but I placated. “Because you’re a man.”
He may have forgotten I have three beautiful daughters.
