As the executive director of the Four Corners Child Advocacy Center, I support measure 7A, which will make the term limits for our district attorney equal to the terms of other elected officials in Montezuma County.
Most county officials, including the assessor, clerk and sheriff, are allowed to seek three consecutive terms in office.
Measure 7A would extend this opportunity to the district attorney, a position currently limited to two terms.
The job of district attorney is incredibly important to the safety of all citizens, particularly our children.
It’s a job that requires significant on-the-job training, expertise and knowledge.
Allowing district attorneys the opportunity to serve three terms will encourage long-term planning and continuity in the prosecution of crimes in Montezuma County.
The past two consecutive terms have allowed for the DA’s office and the Child Advocacy Center to foster a closer, better relationship that positively affects victims and families.
Having been the director of the Four Corners Child Advocacy Center for 10 years, I can attest to the importance of this continuity. The prosecution of child abuse cases, and in particular child sexual abuse, is both difficult and specialized and requires an experienced and trained District Attorney.
Our District Attorney has made that commitment to our child victims in Montezuma County and we need him moving forward. I urge voters to vote YES on 7A.
