Starting Tuesday, a company will survey Cortez residents about bringing fiber optic networking to the city.
The telephone survey is part of the city’s effort to study the prospect of bringing fiber optic network to all homes in Cortez.
In May, CCG Engineering of Maryland and Finley Engineering of Tennessee delivered a feasibility study to the Cortez City Council that analyzed existing network infrastructure, customer broadband bills and speeds, and costs of installing a fiber network in Cortez.
According to the analysis, a fiber optic network could not be funded by municipal bonds alone and likely would require a tax increase.
Results from the survey, which will require responses from 350 Cortez residents, will inform City Council on whether to move forward with a fiber project.
