Judge rejects suit to remove Gunnison sage grouse protection

Colorado lawsuit sought to remove bird’s status as ‘threatened’

During the spring mating season, Gunnison sage grouse males attract females by displaying their filoplumes, air sacs, white breasts and spiky tail feathers. Males break out in vigorous wing fights to defend their areas on the lek. The lek, where this ritual takes place, is an open area with plenty of cover nearby for fast escapes. Interested females follow the sounds of wing brushing and booming air sacs to select mates.
