Police are investigating the circumstances of a death involving a 27-year-old Wisconsin man who was found Tuesday evening “affixed” to a tree near the Durango Dog Park in west Durango.
“This is still a very active investigation,” La Plata County Coroner Jann Smith said Wednesday. “It doesn’t look like there is anything suspicious going on.”
Investigators aren’t sure how the man ended up in the tree, but it appears his body had been there for at least a month, Smith said. He was found by a passerby in an area that isn’t well traveled, she said.
The cause of death is under investigation; the body had no visible signs of gun or knife trauma, Smith said.
Smith declined to release the identity of the individual. She said the man did not have a permanent residence in Durango.
Police found the body fully clothed affixed to a tree by an unidentified material, Smith said.
The Durango Police Department said Tuesday night there is no danger to the public. Durango police did not immediately respond to request for comment on Wednesday.
The body was found around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Smith said investigators plan to perform an autopsy next week.
