Mancos mill gets new life as Aspen Wood Products company, will employ 17
David Sitton recently purchased the former Western Excelsior Corp. mill site, which was severely damaged by a fire in 2017. Sitton is rebuilding the excelsior mill on a smaller scale under the new name of Aspen Wood Products. He also owns Aspen Wall Wood, of Dolores.
An industrial log peeler will process the stacked aspen, then feed it into a shredder to make excelsior at the new Aspen Wood Products mill.
David Sitton works out the details on his way to starting operations of a rebuilt aspen mill in Mancos. Shredded aspen, called excelsior, is used for packing, cooler pads and decorative uses. Production is expected to begin in October, and the mill will employee 17 people.
