Colorado Archaeology Society’s Hisatsinom Chapter will host a lecture by Kathryn Turney about the consequences that land loss has had on Native American culture at 7 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, 515 Park St., in Cortez.
Turney will talk about how the creation of Wupatki National Monument in 1924 caused indigenous residents to be gradually displaced, which resulted in loss of territory and ancestral connections.
The presentation is titled “Social Consequences of Land Loss: Navajo Oral History, Ethnoarchaeology and Spatial Analysis at Wupatki National Monument, Arizona.”
