THE ‘RED SEA’ PARTETH: Dolores senior Chaz Thompson (22) dashes through a hole opened by the Bears’ offensive line during last Friday’s 1A Southern Peaks Conference/2012 season finale at Ignacio. Thompson topped 100 yards rushing (and scored three TD’s) in the 47-6 blowout, but truly stole [pun intended] the show with a CHSAA record-tying three interception-return scores (covering 58, 13, and 99 yards--that on the game’s final play--respectively) off Bobcat quarterback Adison Jones. The existing standard, set by Idalia’s Bill Carpenter, had been alone in the book [readable online at chsaa.org] since 1988.

IGNACIO — Chaz Thompson, a Dolores senior, tied the state mark for most interceptions returned for touchdown in a single game last Friday at Ignacio.

Thompson returned three interceptions for three touchdowns and had six TDs overall in leading Dolores to a convincing 47-6 road win. It was the season finale for both teams in 1A Southern Peaks League action.

Thompson scored his first pick-6 with 4:25 left in the first quarter — a 58-yard return against Ignacio (2-7) quarterback Adison Jones. His second came with 9:23 left in the second quarter — a 13-yarder off Jones, putting Dolores (4-5) ahead 14-0 (after Moki Youngquist’s second consecutive extra-point kick). Thompson’s third, a 99-yarder off Jones, ended the contest with no time left on the clock at Ignacio High School Field.

On offense, Thompson also scored on TD rushes of 48 yards, with 6:46 left in the second; 37, with 4:37 left in the second; and, 1-yard, with 7:03 left in the third. Thompson’s third rushing TD enacted the 40-point, mercy-rule running clock after Youngquist’s extra point gave Dolores a 41-0 lead.

Cody Carroll scored the other touchdown for Dolores.

Thompson, a Montezuma-Cortez transfer, rushed for 109 yards on only four carries with six touchdowns. He had three interceptions and six tackles on defense.
