Cortez businessman Jack Schuenemeyer has received the “Distinguished Lecturer Award” for 2012 from the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences.

The award has enabled Schuenemeyer to travel extensively lecturing before university graduate students.

He lectured in China last December and also at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico.

This year Schuenemeyer has traveled to Germany and the Netherlands in addition to the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. and the University of Ottawa in Canada.

He plans to travel to India next month for a series of five lectures.

Lecture topics include: A statistician’s perspective on gas hydrate (methane in ice) modeling at depths of 300 to 3,000 meters in near offshore areas, and looking for geological characteristics that would help one find potential resources in a frontier area.

Schuenemeyer, who holds a Ph.D. in statistics, has owned and operated Southwest Statistical Consulting in Cortez since 2001. His area of emphasis is earth energy and environmental science.

He was a professor at the University of Delaware from 1976 to 2000.

The International Association for Mathematical Geosciences consists of statisticians, engineers and geoscientists, among others.
