Some new things are happening at one of the oldest buildings in Dolores.

The Rio Grande Southern, the first hotel built in Dolores, now has a beer garden and outdoor patio.

Owner Susi Sieber showed off the patio on Wednesday.

“I decided to build the bar out here to help the Hollywood customers have a place to go,” Sieber said.

The outdoor bar and patio provides plenty of seating and an nice lawn to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

“It’s a great place to relax,” Sieber said.

The patio is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

On Wednesdays, Sieber will host karaoke, something that was also offered at the Hollywood before it burned down on Aug. 2.

There is also a fire pit on the patio.

Sieber said that the additions aren’t actually attached to the building so it doesn’t affect the building’s historical status.

The hotel was built in 1893, shortly after the railroad started to travel through town on the way from Durango to Rico. Through the years, the 3-story hotel and its 15 rooms has stood the test of time and been operated continuously as a boarding house.

Sieber was awarded a beer and wine license late this summer.
