Three Mancos High School students were injured on Sunday afternoon after the car they were riding in ran off the road, rolled one-and-a-half times and came to rest on its roof.
A Mancos School District official confirmed that Kiley Samora, 17, the driver of the car, and her brother, Brett, 15, a back-seat passenger, are hospitalized in Grand Junction after being airlifted with serious injuries.
Their sister, Breana Samora, 16, a front-seat passenger, was treated for minor-to-moderate injuries at Southwest Memorial Hospital and released.
Sgt. Matt Ozanic of the Colorado State Patrol said the accident occurred at 2:29 p.m. He said the Ford Taurus ran off the roadway while traveling northbound on Highway 491 near milepost 32.8.
Ozanic said Brett Samora was thrown from the vehicle when the car rolled after hitting a mailbox.
Alcohol or drug usage were not suspected to be the cause of the single car crash, but initial reports indicated that Kiley Samora may have fallen asleep at the wheel, Ozanic said.
Mancos High Principal Jeanette Allen said the school is conducting a bake sale at 6 p.m. tonight, Thursday, at the high school football game with Ignacios junior varsity. Donation jars have also been placed around town.
Everyone is rallying around to try to support the family, Allen said.
The students, who live in Cortez, previously attended Montezuma-Cortez High School, M-CHS Principal Jason Wayman said.
