This past Saturday, Oct. 13, the SJBL had the season championships in Dove Creek. The 5th and 6th grade football team entered the Championship with a 5-0 record and faced off against rival Towaoc. It was a back and forth game that saw Towaoc win in the final seconds of the game. The Blue Jays fought hard but came up short against a solid Towaoc team. This marked only the second loss in two years for the Mancos squad and will provide fuel for the fire for next season.

The 3rd and 4th grade team entered the Championship with a 7-0 record and steamrolled their way to a league championship that went through Nucla. The younger Jay squad was dominant this season, outscoring their opponents 191-46. The Jays won the Championship in dominating fashion 28-12 over a very talented Nucla squad whose only losses came to Mancos this season.

“As a coaching staff, we couldn’t be prouder of our boys,” said head coach Alan Mathews. “Their records speak for themselves, but their actions and the way they carry themselves speaks volumes of the program and the bonds they are building. I would personally like to thank Doug Wyman, Chris Medina and Mike Morelli who all did an outstanding job this season coaching the players. I would also like to thank all the parents for their great support. We are already looking forward to next season and building this program brick by brick.”
