Incredible Years parenting



class series

The Piñon Project will hold a 14-week Incredible Years parenting class that will begin on Thursday, Oct. 4, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., at The Piñon Project, 300 N. Elm St., Cortez. Martha Becker Memorial Quilt



Show & reception

Enjoy the beauty of fiber arts at the Cortez Cultural Center’s Art Gallery, 25 N. Market St. The Center is honored to host the Martha Becker Memorial Quilt Show running through Nov. 3. Martha was a valued volunteer at the Center, as well as an award-winning quilter. Memorial Service for those who



have lost a pet

Hospice of Montezuma will provide a memorial service on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 10 a.m., for those that have lost pets that they wish to remember. The service will be held at the gazebo area at Hospice, 1345 S. Broadway. Please call 565-4400 for information and directions.




Hollywood’s Saturday Pool Tournaments at new location



The Hollywood Saturday Pool Tournaments begin soon and will be hosted at the American Legion Post 75, 320 N. Harrison St. in Cortez until the rebuild of the Hollywood Bar. Tournament play begins Saturday, Oct. 6, and goes for 10 weeks. For more information, call 565-8151.




Contemporary fine art photography show opening



Join us for the opening of a contemporary fine art photographic show at Olio Wine Bar & Restaurant in Mancos, 114 W. Grand Ave., from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6. Orchard Social celebrates autumn fruit harvest



The Montezuma Orchard Project/Let it Grow Nursery and the Cortez Cultural Center will host an Orchard Social at 25 N. Market St. on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 1 to 5 p.m. Enjoy locally grown heirloom fruits, cider-pressing, a dessert auction, recipe swap, stories, live music, and more. Blessing of the Animals to celebrate Feast of St. Francis



To celebrate the Feast of St. Francis, St. Barnabas Church, 110 W. North St., will have a blessing of the animals at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7 to which all are invited. Animals large and small — four-legged, two-legged, feathered, and finned (and their humans) — are welcomed. Democracy Now! host/author Amy Goodman book tour



KSJD Community Radio and Tami Graham Presents invites you to hear Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman, who will be at the Mancos Opera House from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8 as she tours with her newly-released book, co-authored by Denis Moynihan, titled “The Silenced Majority: Stories of Uprisings, Occupations, Resistance, and Hope.” The Opera House is located at 136 W. Grand Ave. This event is free with a $10 suggested donation. Proceeds raised will benefit KSJD Dryland Community Radio. This timely new sequel gives voice to the many ordinary people standing up to corporate and government power — and refusing to be silent. Series of three conversations that ask ‘Am I a Christian?’

“How You Can Be Part of a Christian Community With Integrity and Not Believe All Those Things You Thought You Had to Believe” is a series of three conversations to be held at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 110 W. North St. (corner North and Elm) at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Oct. 9, 16, and 23. These classes are open for everyone, and are for folks who don’t want to check their minds at a church door; who can’t reconcile what they believe the church requires with their life experience; or who just don’t want to live in a world they think the Christian church espouses but who might enjoy being part of a community of faith. Driver safety course offered by AARP



AARP will sponsor a driver safety course on Thursday, Oct. 11 from 12:30 to 5 p.m. at the Calvin Denton Room in the Empire Electric building, 801 N. Broadway, Cortez. This four-hour course is authorized by the state of Colorado, and designed to meet the needs of older drivers. The course will review safe driving techniques as well as Colorado traffic laws. Completion of this course can qualify you for a discount on your automobile insurance. The course is available to all motorists whether or not they are members of AARP. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers, to be paid by check (no cash or credit cards) which will cover materials. Chamber holds Business After Hours networking event



The Cortez Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to join us for Business After Hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11 at the Cortez Quilt Company, 40 W. Main St. This is a popular, casual networking option for your business. Complimentary beer, wine and appetizers are served. Open to all Chamber members, member employees and invited guests. Bring yourself, your guests, and even current clients for an evening of business and fun, all rolled into one. These events are held the second Thursday of every month at various locations, and give members the opportunity to network with others in the business community in a relaxed setting, while mingling with potential customers, business associates, and community leaders. M-CHS gears up for fall drama production



Montezuma-Cortez High School drama department is gearing up for their fall production, “Arsenic and Old Lace,” a dark comedy classic. The 2012-2013 theatre season will feature shows from the 1930’s and 1940s era, keeping with the department’s theme this year, “A New Deal.” The show will run on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m., and Oct. 13 and 20 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the M-CHS auditorium. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. Five and under are free. Low-Cost Fall Pet Vaccination Clinic



For Pets’ Sake Humane Society will host a Low-Cost Dog and Cat Vaccination Clinic from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the IFA Country Store, 10501 Hwy. 491 in Cortez. Veterinarian Dr. Sue Grabbe with Four Corners MASH will offer dog and cat packages which include rabies, distemper, parvo (dogs), leukemia (cats), and more for $39 each, or $14 for rabies only. Packages without rabies shot are just $32. Exact change is appreciated; checks are okay, but no credit cards please. Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers. Hawaiian Luau Craft and Bake Sale includes lunch, music



Christian Women’s Celebrations invites everyone to their Hawaiian Luau Craft and Bake Sale on Saturday, Oct. 13 at noon at the Cortez Elks Lodge, 2100 N. Dolores Rd. Donated crafts and homemade baked goods are needed and can be brought by 10:30 a.m. Shopping starts at 11 a.m., with an auction to follow after lunch. Hou’oli melodies will be performed by a trio that includes Crystal Bates, Maryann Graff and Cathy Knox. Local speaker, Mickie Baker, will talk about “What Makes a Life.” Admission is $14.50 per person and includes admission, lunch, beverage and dessert, music, and the program. Cowboy Church holds Fall Round-up chuckwagon event



The Southwest Cowboy Church will host their first-ever Fall Round-Up event on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Lewis-Arriola Community Center, 21176 Rd. S. At noon, a chuckwagon meal of cowboy coffee, cowboy cobbler, and cowboy beans, cooked by JD Baker of the Sons of the Pioneers, will be served. Grilled hamburgers and hotdogs will also be available at no cost. The meal is followed at 2 p.m. with entertainment from Sky Shivers, a cowboy humorist, Sam Noble, cowboy poet of the Bar-D, and a concert by the Line Camp Riders. The event is free. All-day Mexican meal fundraiser for Parish kitchen



Antonio’s Restaurant, 104 E. Main St., Cortez, will host an “Afternoon Delight” fundraising meal from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14 for the kitchen remodeling project for St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church’s Parish Hall. The church needs to renovate the kitchen to provide a facility for updated, workable and efficient usage, as well as to host events for the parish. “Afternoon Delight” will include a special menu with a choice of two complete Mexican dinners with sides, and will include tea or coffee and a dessert. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for kids under 8 years old. Alcoholic beverages or fountain drinks are not included in the cost, and the two dinners will be the only ones served at Antonio’s throughout the day. Take out orders will also be available. Proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards the purchase of cooking and serving utensils and small equipment for the newly-remodeled Parish kitchen. Bethel Church Ministry Team coming to Cortez



The Cortez Family Worship Center Foursquare Church will host a ministry team from Bethel Church in Redding Calif. on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 10:30 a.m. Bethel Church has been experiencing a dynamic move of the Holy Spirit for several years with verifiable miracles, signs and wonders. Eating Smart — Being Active classes



The Piñon Project, 300 N. Elm St., will offer an Eating Smart — Being Active class for Kemper, Manaugh, and Mesa families who want to learn about preparing healthier meals and bringing a basic level of activity into their lives. The classes will start Tuesday, Oct. 16, and go from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Kelly Proctor, facilitator, will lead the group through eight weekly lessons designed to help them shop, cook and enjoy entry-level activity. The class offers ideas for a healthier life for families, who will work as a team to develop healthy and tasty recipes. Participants will create (and devour) delicious snacks and light meals in the class while developing friendships and new and useful skills. The activity level is appropriate for any age and almost any condition, as it emphasizes basic stretching and movement, and each person is encouraged to work at a comfortable level. Classes are further enhanced with small take-away incentives useful for food preparation and activity. There is no charge for this program.
