Reasonableness: Why is it so hard to find?
Let’s consider what it takes to be reasonable. First it takes humility, the understanding that it is not about me. It is not about my winning or losing but about finding solutions to the problems we face. It is about taking those baby steps we can agree on, putting the other bigger steps aside, so that we can begin the journey toward solutions. The reasonable person is not an “all or nothing” person. Reasonableness is not about compromising principles. I can be reasonable and seek common ground while holding fast to those beliefs that are important to me.
Reasonableness requires open, honest communication – communication that does not easily take offense. A reasonable person does not take offense because it is not about them. It is about the problems that are crying out for solutions.
I am imploring the politicians and we the people, please, put aside our egos and take the first steps to solutions for the problems we face in this country. We need to understand: When we take the first step, the journey’s begun. Amid the wilderness, an oasis has sprung. The desert is harsh; the oasis is far. Take not the first step and you stay where you are.
