For Pets Sake 3-day yard sale
For Pets Sake Humane Society will have its biggest yard sale ever on Friday through Sunday, Sept. 28-30 at the Cortez Christian Church Family Life Center on the corner of Empire and Hwy. 145. The sale will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Have fun with your fall cleaning and donate those unwanted treasures to the humane society! Presentation on equine brand inspection regulations
The Mesa Verde Back Country Horsemen will present guest speaker Joe Stevenson, Brand Inspector, on the topic, Equine Brand Inspections on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m., at the Elks Lodge, 2100 N. Archaeologist presents Desert Varnish in the Four Corners
The Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society will present Tim Kearns to discuss Desert Varnish in the Four Corners on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St. Desert varnish is a naturally occurring coating on exposed rock surfaces and is relatively common in the Four Corners region, and often associated with prehistoric rock art. Kearns will begin by addressing various aspects of desert varnish including formation, chemical components, age, and relevance, and will then discuss its occurrence in the region. He will summarize the investigation of two prehistoric tool stone procurement (quarry) sites near Montezuma Creek where many of the artifacts were coated with desert varnish, and address the ramifications of this assemblage to the prehistory of the region and describe a varnish dating technique that was applied to the artifacts. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of new directions in desert varnish research. Memorial Service for those who have lost a pet
Hospice of Montezuma will provide a memorial service on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 10 a.m., for those that have lost pets that they wish to remember. The service will be held at the gazebo area at Hospice, 1345 S. Broadway. Please call 565-4400 for information and directions.
Hollywoods Saturday Pool Tournaments at new location
The Hollywood Saturday Pool Tournaments begin soon and will be hosted at the American Legion Post 75, 320 N. Harrison St. in Cortez until the rebuild of the Hollywood Bar. Tournament play begins Saturday, Oct. 6, and goes for 10 weeks. For more information, call 565-8151.
Blessing of the Animals to celebrate Feast of St. Francis
To celebrate the Feast of St. Francis, St. Barnabas Church, 110 W. North St., will have a blessing of the animals at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7 to which all are invited. Animals large and small four-legged, two-legged, feathered, and finned (and their humans) are welcomed. The service will be outdoors, so please have some way to contain any overly-energetic friends. How You Can Be Part of a Christian Community With Integrity and Not Believe All Those Things You Thought You Had to Believe is a series of three conversations to be held at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 110 W. North St. (corner North and Elm) at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Oct. 9, 16, and 23. These classes are open for everyone, and are for folks who dont want to check their minds at a church door; who cant reconcile what they believe the church requires with their life experience; or who just dont want to live in a world they think the Christian church espouses but who might enjoy being part of a community of faith.
