Mancos FD wins sweepstakes trophy at firemen’s convention

Mancos walked away from the annual Tri-State Firemen’s Convention in Dolores with the sweepstakes trophy. Several members of the Mancos Fire Department recently attended the convention, which is the event that Mancos hosted in 2010. Those in attendance were Ray Aspromonte, Natasha Aspromonte, Rick Spencer, Jeremy Dennison, Ed Martinez, Kolton Miller, Darrell Buchanan, Gene Smith, Lyle Cox, and Tony Aspromonte.

The event consists of two days, Friday and Saturday, with half day of training and half day of competition each day. Training included the latest techniques of auto extrication for today’s hybrid vehicles, and 10 deadly sins on the fire ground. Members of Mancos Fire Dept. presented a class called “Large Fire-Small Department — The Weber Fire through our eyes.” One class was canceled due to the strain the Hollywood/Gallery fire put on Dolores’ water system. Tony Aspromonte, Ray Aspromonte, Natasha Aspromonte, Rick Spencer, Kolton Miller, and Darrell Buchanan were out all night Thursday assisting and returning the favor to Dolores Fire for their help on the Weber Fire.

The competition results for Mancos were as follows:

One Man 1st place—Ray Aspromonte;

Two Man 3rd place—Ray Aspromonte and Gene Smith;

Three Man 5th place—Darrell Buchanan, Gene Smith, Rick Spencer;

Five Man 4th place—Darrel Buchanan, Jeremy Dennison, Rick Spencer, Kolten Miller, Tony Aspromonte;

Six Man 3rd place—Ray Aspromonte, Rick Spencer, Darrell Buchanan, Jeremy Dennison, Tony Aspromonte;

Comedy Skit 1st place—Natasha Aspromonte, Rick Spencer, Gene Smith, Darrell Buchanan, Tony Aspromonte;

Sweepstakes — 1st place overall — Mancos Volunteer Fire Dept.
