The Life-long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College is teaming up with the Duane Smith Lecture in Southwest Studies to present “The Greatness of Bears Ears National Monument: Five Tribes Define a Spiritual Cultural Area in Redrock Utah and Make It Law” on Thursday, March 22 at 7 p.m.

This free lecture will be held in the Student Union Ballroom.

Charles F. Wilkinson, professor of law at University of Colorado Boulder, will discuss the first time tribes campaigned for a national monument and succeeded in establishing a system of collaborative management between tribes and federal agencies. In December 2016, President Barack Obama proclaimed monument status on the area. In December 2017, President Donald Trump reduced the size by 85 percent. The tribes have sued.
