I recently spoke to Teresa Howell who said she plans on bringing her coffee shop/bakery/gallery to Dolores. The name of the store will be The Pony Expresso and it will be located in the building on Railroad Avenue that formerly housed Summit Vista Realty.

The store will feature a drive-through, Howell said, and they are targeting an opening on Halloween, with lots of Halloween specials. Check them out on Facebook. Many of you may have seen them at the Harvest Festival on Saturday. The Pony Expresso was most recently located in Antonito, Colo.

Friday was not fun for our local Bears football team. Not only did our beloved team get beat, they also got injured. Several players were sent via ambulance for suspected concussions, others went out for other injuries, thankfully none serious. When the dust settled, five players were hurt in that game and most likely will have to sit a game out this week under doctors’ orders. Let’s hope they are better for homecoming next week.

The Dolores Town Board took their workshop meeting on the road Monday when they toured the water plant in town. Town Manager Ryan Mahoney thought it would be a good idea for our town trustees to see exactly what it takes to make things run in town, including providing fresh water. Some board members said it was fascinating and had no idea just how much went into providing a fresh cup of water, it gives us something to think about when we turn the faucet on. Next month, the board will tour the sewer plant.

The annual walk for breast cancer awareness, usually scheduled on the first weekend of October in Dolores, won’t happen this year. But Sue Tompkins says there are other ways to support the Womens’ Cancer Coalition this month. You can support the “An Evening With Mark Twain” by Dennis Seibel, the local Women’s Cancer Coalition’s 10th Annual Pink Ribbon Affair on Thursday, Oct. 18, 6 p.m. at the Dolores Community Center. Spouses, families, and friends are invited to attend this special evening that honors breast and all cancer survivors. In addition to Mark Twain, there will be an Americana style show, an all-American buffet, a silent auction of great values, and fun door prizes. All proceeds from the $15 ticket benefit Montezuma and Dolores County women with cancer screening. If you have items to donate to the silent auction, please drop them off at Planned Parenthood in Cortez or call 882-4484 for pick up.

I ran into Dolores pro cyclist Lauren Hall over the weekend, she recently returned from a European tour and finished the season with a bang when she placed second in a Italy race, along with some of the best riders in the world. On Monday, she left to begin training for the indoor track national competition in California. Good luck Lauren.

Deanna Truelsen said she is traveling to her 50th class reunion this weekend and was very excited.

I’ve heard reports of bears in and around Dolores, but I still have yet to see one. Maybe that is good, because the brave bears, that stick around when humans are concerned, are usually close to getting in trouble, either euthanized or relocated.
