Mancos track teams start strong in Farmington

Opening their season at the Piedra Vista Invitational in Farmington on March 10, members of the Mancos High School boys and girls track teams showed few signs of rust and posted solid early season results.

Among the top finishers for the girls team was junior Kristen Fogel, who placed seventh in the discus with a toss of 78 feet, 4 inches, and ninth in the shot put with a throw of 26 feet, 11½ inches. Also cracking the Top 10 for the Lady Jays was freshman Grace Manning, who finished eighth in the 1600-meter run (6:18.15) and ninth in the 400-meter dash (1:08.80).

On the boys side, the Bluejays were led by sophomore thrower Caden Showalter, who picked up where he left off last season and posted second-place finishes in the discus (134 feet, 7½ inches) and the shot put (44 feet, 5 inches)

Senior Caleb Yoder led Mancos distance runners with a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:12.09) and a sixth-place finish in the 1600-meter run (4:54.87), while senior Jake McKie followed close behind with eighth-place finishes in the 1600-meter run (5:03.59) and the 3200-meter run (11:30.81).

Sophomore Anthony Medina finished second in the long jump (20 feet, 11½ inches) and ninth in the 200-meter dash (25.11), junior Caden Galloway finished fifth in the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches), and junior Hunter Hoover finished fifth in the triple jump (35 feet, 5 inches).

Senior Peyton Suazo rounded out the Bluejays’ Top 10 finishers with a 10th-place finish in the 400-meter dash (59.17).

Both Mancos track teams will continue their season when they travel to compete at the Center Viking Invitational, which will be held at Monte Vista High School on March 16.
