A violent one-car rollover on Jarrett Avenue in Cortez sent two people to the hospital on Monday.
According to Cortez police officers, a westbound Toyota 4Runner filled with students on lunch break from the Montezuma-Cortez High School flipped after the driver lost control.
Three juveniles were injured, including two who were transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, according to Sgt. Brandon Gunderson. The third suffered facial cuts and was treated at the scene.
The driver was cited for reckless driving, Gunderson said.
The crash, which occurred about 12:30 p.m., is under investigation. Swerving tire tracks could be seen in the gravel leading to the crash, which ended with the vehicle resting on the driver’s side. Glass, clothing and school papers littered the crash site on Jarrett Avenue between South Oak Street and South Cedar Street.
Crews from the Cortez Fire Protection District, Cortez Police Department and Southwest Health System ambulance responded to the scene.
