SOME DOLORES residents are concerned about trash and graffiti around Riverside Ave. and 8th Street as the area seems to grow more popular.

A handful of residents told the Town Board Monday during their regular meeting that they were not happy with the river access on 8th Street and Riverside Avenue.

“There are many, many more people using that spot,” said Dolores resident Tracy Murphy. “And on a weekly basis, I fill up a trash bag.”

This summer, the town added a port-a-potty to the spot and a trash can to the area, which has a popular swimming hole and wading area.

And while the additions to the spot have been welcome, they seem to add more congestion as more people are drawn in.

“It’s not getting better. It’s getting worse. If you build it, they will come,” Murphy told the board.

She told the board she has cleaned up piles of trash and has even run across condoms and hypodermic needles.

“This is where kids swim,” she said.

She requested that the sheriff patrol the area more and that town put the area on a regular maintenance schedule so trash can be cleaned up.

She added that the port-a-potty has been tipped several times and has been tagged with graffiti.

“It is sad,” Murphy said. “This is our watershed. This is our community.”

Town Manager Ryan Mahoney indicated that the town will work to make the port-a-potty “tip proof” next year.

He also indicated that signs will be placed in the area and that there will be more maintenance and enforcement of littering and trespassing laws.

Mahoney said the spot has been very busy this summer and wasn’t sure why.

In other news, Dolores School District Superintendent Scott Cooper asked the Town Board to support the Best Grant bond measure and possibly draft a resolution in support of Measure 3C. The board indicated that would be a good idea and will consider the resolution at a rescheduled Sept. 17 meeting. The board will consider the resolution in support of the measure at this meeting, which has been rescheduled and will be at the Dolores Water Plant, so board members can discuss and learn about the water plant.

Cooper also asked the board permission to hang a banner at Joe Rowell Park that will read “Strong Schools Strong Community” with the bear logo on it.

The board agreed.

The board also voted to appoint Mark Applequist to the Dolores Public Library Board.
