Cody Folsom and Katie Ward have opened Dolores Outfitters, which specializes in outdoor gear, including jeep and ATV rentals.
This location has historically been an outfitter, now Cody Folsom and Katie Ward are continuing the tradition. In addition to outdoor gear and rentals, they plan to offer fishing and hunting licenses, just like the old days.

Dolores Outfitters is bringing outdoor adventure back to town.

The refurbished store and gas station at 341 Railroad Ave. specializes in camping, fishing, hunting, snowshoeing and boating gear, plus offers rentals for paddle boards, jeeps, ATVs and snowmobiles. The large retail space includes outdoor clothing, and a convenience store area of snacks, camping food, sodas and coffee. There is also a section of products for dogs.

“We cater to all of the outdoor activities and will set you up for your next adventure,” says owner Cody Folsom, who teamed up with his girlfriend, Katie Ward, to open his dream shop.

Dolores Outfitters is working with Colorado Parks and Wildlife to offer fishing and hunting licenses too, just like in the old days.

“We are bringing back the days when Gene Story owned a popular outfitter in this same location,” says Ward, referring to the well-known retired hunting guide and former county commissioner.

A true jack-of-all-trades, Folsom knows his business, and is a bona fide gearhead. His extensive knowledge of the local backcountry is an added benefit of shopping at his store.

“I’ll direct you where you want to go – jeeping with the best views, easy hikes, epic mountaineering, or good fishing spots,” he says.

Outdoor safety and adventure presentations are also in the future at the store. Ward is a certified dog trainer and plans to offer classes on the topic as well.

After years working in oil and gas fields, Folsom saw a business opportunity in the outdoor playground that defines Dolores.

“I grew up in this country, and I’m thrilled to support all of this outdoor fun we’re known for,” he says.

Folsom loves that Dolores is an eclectic mix of devoted motorheads, mountain bikers, skiers, hunters and kayakers. He and Ward are ready to serve them all, and they take great pride in seeing all kinds mingle in their shop.

Because really, what mountain biker wouldn’t love jet skiing on McPhee? And any motorhead would surely get a hoot out of a raft ride through the infamous Snaggletooth Rapid on the Dolores River.

“Just like Katie and I – new age progressive meets mountain man hick – our shop is a gathering place for everyone,” Folsom said with a grin.

Dolores Outfitters is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. In summer, it will be open seven days per week.
