Scott Tipton is not doing average Coloradoans any favors. Here are tax cut items that Tipton voted for in December:
Are you a teacher? Tipton’s House version eliminated deductions for classroom supplies. The Senate did add back $250. Need to move for a job? Can’t write off any of the moving costs now.Paying alimony? Starting in 2019, that will not be deductible to you.Imagine that we have some fires this summer. Sadly, if your house burns, you cannot report a loss on your taxes unless it is a federally declared disaster. Same with theft and flooding losses.Do you have children you claim on your taxes? Guess what? That doubled standard deduction isn’t really true. Tipton forgot to mention that personal exemptions are gone – $4,050 per person! This is less deduction with two dependents. If your child has unearned income, you will probably have to pay more tax on that. Schedule A deductions are still around, but since the standard deduction went up it won’t help you to itemize and use those deductions.Oh, almost forgot. The lower tax brackets expire by 2027.The mandate for carrying health insurance is taken away starting next year. If we want health insurance, it might make it very expensive since we will finance the uninsured. How are our children going to deal with the debt that this tax plan has created? Watch very carefully, and remember that Scott Tipton voted for all of the above.
