“If you ask me, Great Old Broads are the invasive weeds.” Larry Don Suckla, Montezuma County Commissioner, said that at the Dec. 12, 2017 commissioners’ meeting.
The comment was made during a presentation by Bonnie Loving, director of the county’s weed dept. after she had referenced Great Old Broads’ work removing invasive weeds at Boggy Draw last year.
Well, yes, it’s a good metaphor for us in some ways. We’re tough. We thrive in difficult environments, and as a group we have some things in common, but we’re also diverse and we’re not going away!
The local group of Great Old Broads for Wilderness adopted the Maverick Trail at Boggy Draw in a partnership with Montezuma County and San Juan National Forest under the direction of Bonnie and April, her assistant. We spent 93 hours on this task last summer and early fall, and see this as an on-going project.
We are doing this because it fits with our mission of caring for public lands and because we all live here, care about the health of our county and see it as a good way to give back.
We would be happy to let the commissioners know when we’ll be working this year if they would like to check it out while they’re biking, hiking, horse back riding or otherwise enjoying the area.
