Congratulations to Dennis Story and Karen Finch for recently being selected as a true Champion for Children. During the month of June, the Four Corners Child Advocacy Center (The NEST) receives nominations from the community for an individual or organization, in the Four Corners Region, who makes a difference in the lives of children. This honor is announced at the Annual Champion for Children Celebration held at Let It Grow Nursery. This year’s celebration was held on Friday, July 13th.

Dennis is the Director of Montezuma County Department of Social Services; as well has, participates in various collaborative projects throughout the community. Dennis received several nominations from various community members. Each nomination included a supporting narrative which described his character and activities relevant to the submission. Dennis has been a champion for Montezuma County’s children since 1976. He never fails to step up to the plate and offer whatever he can to support the kids in our community. Those of us who serve children in the community could not do it as effectively or efficiently without his dedication, guidance and support. He is engaged in areas where most Directors of Social Services would shy away; identifying and working toward collaborative solutions so that we might eliminate gaps in services. Dennis is described as humble and always giving credit to others. Dennis is truly a champion for all children in our community.

Karen Finch has been a school counselor at Dolores Elementary School for many years. She demonstrates an unwavering and heartfelt advocacy for and dedication to the children of Montezuma County. Karen is an outstanding school counselor, often going above and beyond the requirements of her job; implementing a successful character education program, growing the positive behavior intervention support program within the school community, supporting the social and emotional needs of children, and making sure children and families receive needed services within the community. Everything she does is to help our children grow into healthy and productive adults. Karen volunteers her time on behalf of our children as a member of the Child Protection Team and also conducts an annual grief camp for children dealing with grief issues. Her energy, enthusiasm and love for children shine through in all she does. Karen is truly deserving of being honored as champion for children in our community.

The Champion for Children Celebration is a fundraising event to support the intervention and prevention of Child Abuse in Four Corners Region of Colorado. The event was held in the beautiful garden of Let It Grow Nursery. The NEST appreciates all who contributed and came out to celebrate this year’s Champion for Children.

The NEST provides a safe, child-friendly environment that eases the emotional trauma experienced by children during the investigation and prosecution of child abuse cases. We’ve been serving child victims of abuse and their non-offending family members since 1992. The mission of The NEST is to strengthen our community’s response to child abuse and neglect through prevention, intervention, education and advocacy.
