Stage 1 of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge will course through Mancos and Dolores along U.S. 160 and State Highway 184 Monday.

The Cortez Journal will be there to cover the first leg in what is billed as “the most grueling bicycle race in North America.” A lead story and photos will be in the Tuesday edition, as well as frequent updates at www.cortezjournal.com.

Racing begins Monday morning at 10 a.m., on Main Avenue in Durango. After three laps in Durango, racers will make their way to Mancos. Racers are expected to be in Dolores, the main spectator point, after 2 p.m.

There will be a record 29 hours of TV coverage of the race this year on the NBC family of networks, including a prerace preview show that will be taped in Durango. It’s scheduled to air at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 19. Tape-delayed coverage of Stage 1 is scheduled to be aired starting at 2 p.m. Monday.
