FRIDAY, JULY 27
An officer was dispatched to Walmart for a report of a juvenile shoplifter. A loss prevention officer had observed the female select a pair of panties and put them in her bag, and other employees had observed her take other items as well. The juvenile was stopped in the foyer of the store and apprehended. The total value of the items stolen totaled to $75.02. She was issued a summons for shoplifting and was released to the custody of her grandmother.
SATURDAY, JULY 28
An officer was asked to respond to Walmart for a shoplifting complaint. Loss prevention informed him that three females had run out of the store with a bag full of items. One female was stopped outside and the other two ran westbound towards the AT&T store. The women had been observed in a part of the store known to be a high theft area, and appeared very nervous. All three women were hiding numerous womens clothing items and one pair of mens shoes inside of a handbag they had taken off a shelf. The officer contacted two women walking towards Walmart, after they were identified as the two suspects who had run away. The total for the items stolen was $103.32. When asked why she had taken the mens shoes, one of the women stated that she had stolen them for her boyfriend. The store wanted to pursue charges against the women, and all three were issued summons for shoplifting and trespass notices.
SUNDAY, JULY 29
At around 11 p.m., and officer observed a car traveling on county roads without a license plate. The car accelerated quickly away from the officer and he caught up to it and confirmed that it did not have a plate. The driver hand signaled and suddenly turned down a residential driveway and stopped in front of the home. The officer happened to know the residents at the location and didnt think the car had any reason to be at the house. No emergency lights were activated, but the female driver got out of the car and began to tell the officer she was sorry, that she was just test driving the car and thinking about buying it. The officer noted that she was wearing her work uniform from a local restaurant. She admitted that she didnt have a drivers license, or any form of ID, and said that she had just moved to this area from the east coast and was trying to get ID. She gave a name and date of birth that did not match the age she gave the officer, and dispatch advised that there was no record of such a person. The officer was asked to follow her to another location, but once there, she was unable to provide paperwork with her name on it to prove she was who she said she was. A male came out of the house who identified himself as her boyfriend. When the officer asked what her last name was, he did not answer. The female got mad at the boyfriend and said You sleep with me and you dont even know my name. The male looked puzzled and didnt know what to say. She finally gave the officer a name, and her license came back as revoked with two active restraints. The female said that she lied because a gang is after her, as well as the Aryan Brotherhood, because her ex-boyfriend owes the gang money for drugs. She said her boyfriend had bought the car a month earlier but they had not made any attempt to register it. The police officer also learned that the name she gave him turned out to be an alias. She was charged with providing false information, driving under revocation, no insurance, and operating an unregistered vehicle. The officer viewed a previous jail photo of the female and confirmed it was the same person.
MONDAY, JULY 30
An officer was dispatched to Safeway for a report of a shoplifter who was being detained by store security. The adult male did not wish to cooperate with the police officer, so information was provided by the loss prevention officer. The suspect was observed as he picked up a package of boneless ribs and a package of colby cheese from store shelves. He then entered the mens restroom carrying the items and when he came out, he no longer had the items in his hands. He passed all points of sale and exited the store and was contacted outside, where he admitted to stealing the items. He was escorted back inside and produced the items from inside his clothing. He was issued a summons for shoplifting and a trespass notice prohibiting him from returning to store property for one year.
An officer was at Cortez City Hall for a municipal court trial, when a woman in the courtroom started getting upset. The woman began yelling and cursing at the officer, the attorney and the judge. The judge requested that the officer place the woman under arrest for direct contempt of court. She was taken into custody, handcuffed and transported to the county detention center where she was left in the care and custody of jail staff.
